What exactly were you saying? No borders? Ahh, yea, the typical Lennonic theme. What else? Communities? Cute. Peace on earth, ha? Free knowledge. No possessions? What do you want, permaculture? Grow all your food and shit? Perfect. I would take it without thinking twice.
But honey, with all respect, utopia is utopia, isn't it? It's not very practical."
Do you have any idea how many times I heard this line?
Surly more than hundreds… Much more.
From the day I started to believe in Peter Pan and broke my arm while trying to fly (gravity is rubbish, thanks), it has never stopped. In every activist group I've been to, every new optimist programme for changing the world… people have always been so desperately "efficient", even if they actually weren't.
"You really do have some nice ideas," they said shoddily in order to comfort me before shutting me down, "but now it's time to think practically."
Yes, practically.
What a terrible word.
It's like the pin that blows your bubble up – with no coherent reason. Dreams shouldn't be called "impractical", and utopia – since we can dream it and see it in front of our eyes so clearly – can't possibly be impossible…. It's there; we just have to find a way to make it real.
This space is free.
Put everything you want into it; make suggestions, bring up some new dreams, be whatever you wish to be. Spread some knowledge and magical dust to the air – it might work. Be creative. And be free.
